However, Peter urges us not to forget that “with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day” (v8). Therefore, while humans are limited by the idea of time, God is unbounded by it. It may seem like God is slow to fulfill the promise to those who don’t understand this fact, but Peter tells us that God is just being patient to us (v9).

Peter’s reminders prepare us for what we will face leading up to the second coming. Not only will people try to question us or laugh at us, but “the day of the Lord will come like a thief”, so it will be sudden and will take the world by surprise (v10). However, we as Christians will be waiting for and expecting that day.

Reference 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 in which Paul states similarly that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. But a thief only takes someone by surprise during the night, when it’s hard to see and everything is shrouded in darkness. Christians, however, are children of God’s light and are not of the darkness, so as people set apart, we should stay awake for the day of the Lord as to not be surprised when it comes. Being alert means to be active as we wait, guarding our hearts with faith and love and guarding our minds with the hope we have in Christ.

V14-18

In Peter’s final words, he reminds us to be blameless before God as we await the day of the second coming. The Lord is patient on our account, as mentioned in verse 9, that none of us will perish. However, it is important to note that this letter from Peter is addressed to Christians, therefore, he means that God is patient towards the Christian people, giving them a chance to repent. When examining the context of Peter’s letter, it is clear that the “you” here isn’t referring to all people in general, rather, it is referring specifically to the audience of Christians.

God is patient towards his people so that they won’t perish, again reminding us of God’s gracious gift of salvation.

Though it may seem to many people that God is unaccountable because they don’t see the promise coming to fruition, we know this false belief is a result of the limitation of man. We shouldn’t waver in our faith when people twist the words of the Scriptures, because we as Christians already know that these heresies exist in the world.
